Why I Attend New York Fashion Week (& how I prepare)

If you’ve been here for sometime (thank you!), you know I’m a REAL fashionista. In fact, my love for fashion was the original inspiration behind this blog! For as long as I can remember, I wanted to inspire and empower REAL women (of all ages, races, sizes, and careers) to accept themselves, be themselves, and express themselves. And though this personal mission has since expanded from an exclusive focus on fashion into my brand, event series, and online community Ditch the Clique, I still accept any good reason to talk style! And with New York Fashion Week (NYFW) just around the corner, I can’t think of a better time to dive back in!

How I’m feeling after one year of marriage…

And just like that, I’m celebrating my first wedding anniversary…WILD! It honestly feels like just yesterday my best friend and I were being married by my dad at an intimate Central Park ceremony surrounded by 25 of our closest family and friends. And as much as I’ve always hated when women say “my wedding was the best day of my life” it really, truly was.

But as mentioned in my post 8 Years Later I (FINALLY) Married My Best Friend (but it wasn’t always easy), it REALLY isn’t always easy. We’ve had our moments and guess what? We still do! We’ve never been ones to do things traditionally— we told almost no one about the wedding, and at times felt as though people and finances were against us. Hell, just months before the wedding we felt “against” each other as we sorted through “are you really my one and only, forever?” And I know…that’s hard to read (and I promise, even harder to write) but I say it because 1. It’s the truth and 2. People just don’t talk about THAT very important and trying part of marriage.

Turns out, our parents were simply doing their best…

It’s funny the things we realize as we get older….

Things like money doesn’t grow on trees, who you surround yourself with REALLY does matter, actions have consequences, and people really are doing the best with what they have.

Over the past week I prepared to vacation with my mom for the first time since middle school (yes you read that right), and in preparing I REALLY got to thinking about that last one…

People or (in this case) PARENTS are doing the best with what they have.
