Just as I suspected in my How I Plan for NYFW blog post, fashion week looked A LOT different this season here in New York (and around the WORLD)! But GIRL I don’t necessarily know that that’s a bad thing. In fact, I can confidently say this is the most inclusive, diverse, and creative New York Fashion Week I’ve been blessed to be a part of!
Now don’t get me wrong, I seriously MISS what prior seasons looked like. I miss running around the city going show to show, bumping into friends, networking with new ones, exclusively viewing UNBELIEVABLE collections LIVE, and MAYBE even waiting in line…maybe. But what really stood out to me this season that brings it to the top of my list?
The diversity, creativity, and inclusivity.
This seasons shows were far less crowded, many took place on rooftops with gorgeous city views or in the street (LITERALLY), and were far more inclusive featuring diverse models and designers (which is a HUGE step for the industry if you ask me!). And thanks to virtual streaming of this seasons runway presentations, fashion week has NEVER been so accessible to “regular” people…and all I can say is IT’S ABOUT DANG TIME!
Certainly (as expected) this uncertain season meant less shows to attend for those in the industry like myself. But even though I only attended one designer presentation in person, I truly can’t complain. I vividly remember a time when ALL I ever wanted was to attend just ONE show….
For me personally, this shift in the industry provided NEW opportunities too! This season I partnered with some INCREDIBLE online brands like Fantasy Fashion Week who hired me to report on all the NYFW runway trends! And GIRL…THAT is one of those big dreams I also preach about achieving in Ditch the Clique. And I’m SO grateful for that.
My point to all of this?
YES. COVID sucks. And racism REALLY sucks. A lot of things in 2020 suck. But 2020 has given us the opportunity to MAKE and EMBRACE the changes we’ve so desperately needed as an industry, country, and WORLD. And GIRL, I’m really grateful for that too.
