Switching Careers and Following your Dreams with Kalyn Chandler

From lawyer to business owner, Kalyn Chandler didn’t wait for the perfect time to make a career change — she took the leap and followed her dreams, no matter where they took her.

Founder, owner, and creative director of Effie’s Paper: Stationary & Whatnot, Kalyn created a lifestyle brand that presents cool and on-trend accessories for fun at work, stylish travel, and a chic daily life. But her path to this point had a lot of pit stops, including a 10-year stint working at a law firm (where she never intended to even practice law in the first place).  But finally she transitioned out of law and took some time to figure out what she REALLY wanted to be when she grew up (a question that plagues us all, no matter our age).

After a few months of visiting new places and spending time with friends and family, she entered the world of personal styling. She had always been the friend people called when they needed fashion advice, so the transition felt VERY natural. Even though she worked hard to turn her passion into a business, the behind-the-scenes of the business side didn’t agree with her. And after only a year, she was burnt out (planning her wedding during this time probably didn’t help, either).

But the wedding (in more ways than one) was a blessing! Five months after, as she was writing thank-you notes, she looked around at the stationary and ABSOLUTELY fell in love. She had always liked stationary, but this set held a special place in her heart because she helped design it. After seeing an idea in her mind come to fruition on paper, she got the idea to start her VERY OWN stationary company

Did she know anything about stationary or graphic design? No. But did that stop her? Absolutely not! She worked with a friend at a printing company and created 10 designs for an organization she belonged to. A week later, when she attended their national convention, she brought the sets with her and SOLD OUT. That’s when it really sunk in that she was onto something.

From there, she created a website and began putting more and more pieces of her business together. She relied heavily on the internet and taught herself to use design programs and practice her skills. Now, 10 years later, she runs the thriving and inspiring business Effie’s Paper: Stationary & Whatnot.

Kalyn never would have guessed she would end up an entrepreneur when she was in law school. Instead of waiting for the “perfect” time to launch her idea, she just took the leap and adjusted as she went. She had nothing to lose and KNEW it was worth it to try.

“Perfection doesn’t exist, so if that’s what you are waiting for, I’ve got some bad news for you: You’re going to wait forever.”

One of the things that keeps Kalyn going is the quote: “You didn’t come this far just to come this far.” This inspired her to look beyond her current obstacles and instead learn from each setback. She also relies on her supporters hyping her up every step of the way, and a consistent workout routine to start her days off right. OH & one of her favorite books, The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber, talks about the stages of entrepreneurship and gives her and other entrepreneurs valuable advice for starting out running their own business.

With this idea in mind, Kalyn’s future goals are ambitious. She will continue to scale her business and launch new products. In addition, she hopes to get a large distribution deal and land her products in stores like Target or TJ Maxx. This way, she can reach even more women and bring joy and positivity into their lives!
