What it’s Like to Attend NYFW

A recap of exactly what shows I attended this season and what I wore to NYFW AW19.

If you know me (or read my February post) you know I LIVE for fashion week! And maybe you’re like…um, what’s the big deal? Well LET ME TELL YOU…

Twice a year in February and September designers across the fashion capitals of the world (New York, London, Paris, and Milan) take a week to showcase their upcoming collection for the next season on the runway. For example, February’s exhibition is called AW19 as designers are debuting their designs for the 2019 Autumn/Winter season. Not only do these runway shows forecast styles, trends and colors for the upcoming season, but they serve as a time for the fashion community to connect, too!

Since I was about 13 I dreamed of attending fashion week and am beyond blessed to have attended my 5th season of NYFW just this last week! (Fun fact: my first EVER fashion week experience was while I was living abroad in London). After last season, I set myself a goal to fill my fashion week schedule with BOTH shows and events that are not only inspirational but helpful in deepening industry relationships too. Through my research I was convinced that a determined mind and killer streetstyle outfits could launch me to my goal and the next level. And I must confess- with a lot of research, hours of outfit planning, and hundreds of emails, I did just that!

P.s. I tell you this NOT to boast but to remind you that with hard work, faith, and determination comes accomplishment.

I am SO excited to share with you the events and shows I had the pleasure of attending this season, but I am particularly excited to recap the fashion week outfit y’all have been BEGGING me to know more about (it’s under $100 by the way!)

Keep reading below to shop this look under $100!

NYFW Events

I am VERY grateful to have been invited to SO many NYFW events and parties this season, but sadly with countless events in just one fashionable week, there were a few I had to miss. Those I did attend were not only a ton of fun, but also an incredible time of connection and learning. One of my favorites included the NYFW Galentines Day celebration hosted by my #girlgang Exclusively Social. Happening at the ultra fab and insta-worthy LRoom Cafe, I had the pleasure of not only celebrating with some of my fellow NYC fashionista’s but I also enjoyed meeting Red Carpet Rocks! The brand’s CEO and boss babe, Urvi, even lent me her Rihanna Crystal Choker for the evening and IT WAS EVERYTHING!

Some other fab events I attended during fashion week included brunch with The Beauty Counter. I also enjoyed a fabulous NYFW glam session at The Caravan Stylist Studio that, if you’re part of my Instagram fam, you saw in stories (you can also re-watch in my NYFW highlight reel). And OH! I ended the week on a high note- dancing the night away at the Nolcha Shows NYFW after party.

NYFW Runway

Ever since attending my first runway show at London Fashion Week while living abroad, there is an indescribable excitement and inspiration I feel watching talented models in flawless designs float down the runway. That being said, it is incredibly difficult for me to pick a “favorite” designer or showcase each season. This season, a few of the shows I was invited to attend included the exhibition by my dear friend and luxury designer Clavon Leonard, the Frederick Anderson Park Ave showcase, and the Indonesian Diversity Fashion Gallery presentation. I particularly loved being immersed in the Indonesian culture through each designer’s use of incredible video storytelling alongside intricate, colorful, modern designs. In fact, there were multiple pieces from the collection I could see myself wearing on the daily!

Some style highlights I gathered from ALL of this season’s runways include
purple transitioning from spring and summer lavender to deep eggplant shades for autumn/winter. Tasteful yet bold, intricate appliques and embellishments are the new way to jazz go-to pieces. And thank goodness structured suits in bright colors are here to stay, too!

What I Wore

Knowing purple has been a powerful color ruling the runway and streetstyle for back to back seasons (AND serving as my favorite color) I opted for a monochromatic lilac look. When styling an outfit, whether for daily wear or fashion week, I select one aspect of the look to guide my creativity through outfitting. For this look, I was SUPER inspired by my find of this beret and went with a French/European theme from there! Each piece of this outfit is a slightly different tone of lilac, perfectly complimented by my favorite orange fur to finish the look. Though lilac is a color I do not wear often, I had the BEST time and felt crazy confident running around the city to different shows and events in this outfit. And did I mention, I put together this look for under $100?

Sending a HUGE thank you to the fun and fabulous Victoria Saperstein for shooting this in the midst of fashion week craziness and NYFW paparazzi! And to all of the designers and agencies I had the pleasure of collaborating with during NYFW AW19! Already looking forward to next season!
