3 Ways to Reclaim Control

Right now, life feels out of our control…

Our day to day lives have been turned upside down! Schedules are non existent (what is time, anyway?), and in-person connection is no longer…LITERALLY. It truly feels as though there is nothing to work for or look forward to.

But recently, I was met with the quote “Don’t be a slave to your thoughts; control them” and honestly I was OVERWHELMED by its truth. It reminded me that in times of uncertainty and sadness we have the choice to reclaim control when we focus our thoughts on the positive rather than negative. Now don’t get me wrong, not-so-great moments in quarantine are allowed and NECESSARY! But only when used as a means to process and move BEYOND!

But HOW do we focus our thoughts on the positive rather than negative in order to reclaim control?

Well, I’m no expert BUT keep reading for a few ways I’ve worked to regain control of my thoughts and my LIFE in quarantine.

  1. Make a plan for your future.

I know, thinking about the future can feel so bleak right now. But it doesn’t have to be! Rather than focusing on what you will do when life returns to “normal” try channeling your energy into a project that can make a difference in your life both now and long term! If you’ve been following along here for any amount of time, you know I’m a firm believer in the power of dreaming BIG! I believe when we map out the steps to achieving a dream, the path to our dream becomes actionable and achievable. So for me, mapping out the steps to achieving a dream and focusing on completing even the smallest step gives me so much more control over my life!

2. Create a routine.

I know, EVERYONE is saying we should have a routine in quarantine but hear me out. By no means am I suggesting that mimicking a “typical” day will help you reclaim control over your life (in fact, I think it may do the opposite). Instead, create yourself a NEW routine (specific to your current quarantine situation) that you look forward to! Now, I’ll spare you from having to read my ENTIRE routine, but I can tell you I’ve added a few NEW items that spark joy and provide me a sense of control! A few of those include a diligent skincare routine both morning and night (I had one before but now I have the time to take my time with it!). I also enjoy creating a fun and refreshing spa water every morning (I prefer orange and cucumber), and I’ve set a strict time frame to separate work from play and exercise! These few little things provide me so much more control over my day and LIFE!

3. Surround yourself with positivity

Another thing I’m ALWAYS saying here on my corner of the internet? Surrounding yourself with motivational, inspirational, and powerful people empowers you too! Obviously right now we can’t physically be around those who help show us the best version of ourselves ,but that doesn’t mean we can’t still be surrounded by positivity! May I suggest Facetiming with an encouraging friend, or calling a mentor/motivator in your life! You can always pick up an inspirational book or stream a motivational podcast, too! Personally, I immerse myself in daily quotes and weekly motivational podcasts to maintain positive energy and reclaim control over my thoughts.

This time isn’t easy but I promise we are on the up and up! For now, focus on what you CAN control, and make the choice to see the positive over the negative in this time!
